What is I/O module?
I/O module, as a basic industrial field input and output device which has a large scale of mature application in the automation area. It is mainly used with PLC controller or host computer software. The I/O module takes the duty to collect the field data and send it to the upper control devices. Then after calculation and processing, the controller sends the output data to the I/O system to control the field equipment, thus it forms one closed-loop control.

What is remote I/O?
The remote  I/O, from its structure it is divided into integrated structure and modular structure. The integrated  I/O with less  I/O points and low cost, which is suitable for less field requirement of manufacturer or smart manufacturing improvement project. In large-scale system integration projects, the number of  I/O points is at least over hundreds of points, so remote I/O has absolute advantages in cost and expandability compared with other I/O products in these projects. 

Why the I/O system is required?
Limited by size and PLC itself with restricted number of I/O points, most of the time it cannot meet the needs of field use. So this will need external extended I/O points which could be divided into local extension I/O and remote extension I/O. Local extension I/O uses auxiliary I/O module from PLC manufacturer, it is simple for configuration and easy for using but the price is higher. The remote extension can use a third party I/O module, and it connects PLC via a standard communication interface. The remote I/O configuration is relatively complicated but price is more economical and the selection is multiple. When it is used in the industrial field and accessed with a lot of I/O, the site wiring is simple and labor cost is low.
